Wilderness at the Top of Australia
Travelling the back roads into Kosciusko National Park we discover how little rural grazing life in the
Snowy Mountains has changed over the hundred years since Banjo Paterson travelled the high country and wrote
his famous 'Man From Snowy River' poem.
Getting off the beaten tracks in the summer months we discover the historic huts in the high plains miles
away from townships, where whole family's once lived while tending their sheep and cattle. Amongst the native
forests of Snow Gums we find huge lakes that make up the Snowy Hydro-Electric scheme. Passing the little
mountain rivers brimming with rainbow and brown trout we stop and explore Kiandra, a ghost town that saw
Australia's shortest gold rush as well as the formation of the first downhill skiing club in the world.
Passing through tall forests of Mountain Ash gums and the shorter forests of Black Sally and Snow Gum you
might be lucky enough to discover alpine dingoes, wombats or the wild brumby horses that still roam the
region.
Only by actually experiencing it can you begin to understand the mystery surrounding the top of Australia
and the legend of 'The Man From Snowy River'
