-
Day 1: Pilot Wilderness & Snowy River
-
The rooftop of Australia deep in the heart of the Snowy Mountains
Your friendly MudMaps bushman-guide will collect you early and quickly depart Canberra via the highway south through the Monaro sheep grazing country. Spending several hours travelling the highway and little country towns we gain in altitude until reaching Jindabyne near the base of Mt Kosciusko - the head waters of the famous Snowy River.
-
-
Crossing the fledgling Snowy River as it leaves Lake Jindabyne we turn off, leave the tarred road behind, enter Kosciusko N.P. and off the edge of a plateau winding our way down the spectacular Jacobs Ladder to the Snowy River below. With many opportunities to stop, photograph the Pilot Wilderness Area and explore the park we reach the valley floor and the Snowy River again where it's joined by the Pinch River flowing out of the Pilot. All the time your MudMaps guide is explaining to you the history of
the area and of course Banjo Paterson's famous 'Man From Snowy River' poem. Down here in the area known by the locals as 'the Pinch' we stop and enjoy a picnic BBQ lunch on the banks of the Snowy - often in the company of wild emus that live in the area. The afternoon is spent exploring the secrets of the mountain in this remote part of Australia before making our way up out of the valley, through the remote mountain village of Suggan Buggan and onto the Wulgulmerang Plateau. Here up amongst the High
Plains, Black Sallee and Snow Gum trees we find our farmstay Bed & Breakfast 'Springs" and our hosts Esme & Bob Boys.
OVERNIGHT: 'SPRINGS' Bed & Breakfast. Private Room with Shared facilities. L/D
-
Day 2: Snowy River National Park & McKillops Bridge
-
The remote and wild Snowy River region
You rise to one of Esme's healthy high country breakfasts way out here in this remote area of Australia and make ready for another day exploring. Leaving "Springs" this morning we enter the Snowy River National Park where you discover it's truly spectacular mountain scenery and forests up around the Gelatipy Plateau. You'll hike and explore the Little River and it's pretty waterfalls and then we find ourselves across McKillops Bridge - the only bridge over the Snowy in it's prime. After
exploring the area and the Snowy River for the last time we cross the bridge and start to wind our way up and along the Deddick River valley. We travel through the tiny remote farming towns of Deddick and Tubbut and across to Bonang. Near here we join the tar road again and wind our way out of the forests and back through farming and forestry countryside as we make our way back to Cooma and Canberra.
