What is a Mud Map?

In the days before printed maps when people travelled the outback and remote parts of the world they would often run into fellow travellers.

A rare occassion like this would often mean sitting down and sharing a meal or cup of tea and share stories about each other adventures.

These stories were sometimes augmented by drawing a map on the ground or in the mud.

Over time these became known as 'mud maps' and convey the essence of sitting and sharing rare knowledge with fellow travellers.

MudMaps History

MudMaps was established in 1990 with the launch of 4WD and outback tours in the beautiful Snowy Mountains of Australia.

Not happy to skim over the surface of beautiful areas MudMaps focused on immersing visitors to Australia in the environment and landscape to really understand the basis of Australian culture.

Having successfully won 3 tourism awards the company went onto expand into the extended tour market with overland tours between Sydney and Melbourne and conduct many private tours throughout Australia while remaining committed to the beautiful Australian Alps. That part of Australia containing the largest and most diverse national park system in the country, and home to the legendary Man From Snowy River.

Expanding internationally the company opened an office in Silicon Valley, California in the 1990s as well as building long term partnerships with airlines and agents around the world. With a move of its head office to Queensland in 2009 it began operating different tours in different parts of the world.

In 2015 it tested the market under the Hidden Hostels brand for remote area accommodation bookings before switching to the main MudMaps brand and including all sorts of remote area accommodation types for the wide range of travelers to these parts of the globe.

From his work building travel industry associations as well as the largest online tourism knowledgebase in the world our Founder, Mark Phillips, knew the difficulties that face accommodation providers in establishing themselves. Combining that industry knowledge with the experience he gained while working with tech giants Apple & Microsoft Mark formed a team to specifically create a strong, modern, digital value proposition to assist remote travellers and digital nomads find fascinating stays around the world while assisting accommodation providers in regional & remote areas grow their business.
